Masculine

Hello Monday, my friends! And welcome to another week on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. Thank you for joining us for the  LOTS OF TEXTURE  Challenge and we hope you will all join us again this week too.

Please join me in welcoming our guest artist for June, Thom Santilla! I know you will enjoy his grungy, layered style. Welcome Thom!

This week we are also showcasing the Professor of craft... Tim Holtz! If you have products from Tim, we would love to see them in your creations!

This week the challenge is: MASCULINE

I just got back from seeing my eye specialists in New York City. My sister and I take the train, and Tim's Inspector stamp set reminds me of the train conductors. Also, I had to pull this patterned paper to use, because it says New York.  I just want to give a big shout out to all the Amtrak personnel who assisted me on my journey - You are the BEST!!.

I began by stamping my images and adding some color with Tombow Markers Next, I fussy cut them. Later, I added some gold accents to the images with a pen.

I added the paper from Tim Holtz's Abandoned paper pack. I cut out a piece of his fabric (love this!) to layer, and another piece to tie at the top.  Next, I popped my images to add to the tag.

I decided I wanted some more texture, so added some Brass texture paste with the Code stencil.

I added glossy accents to his goggles and the dials, and a quote.

ADVENTURE IS WORTHWHILE

Even though the focus of our trips to New York City are to see the eye specialists, we always turn it into an adventure. This trip we stayed in Chinatown, went to great restaurants, museums, and did some shopping too. Glad to have my TRAIN CONDUCTORS to assist me on my journey!

Fabric Swirls

Here is another idea for using fabric.  At first when I created my fabric flowers, I thought I was going to use several on the cover of my December Daily, but felt it was a bit overwhelming for the size of the album I was working with.

I started playing around with the idea of making fabric swirls.  All I did was cut a long strip (total length will determine how large the swirl will be), about a half to an inch in width, and started to twist it and coil.  As I coiled the fabric, periodically I added a bit of glue (I used the 3 in 1 glue again for this) to keep the shape together.  When done, check it over to see if you need to add a bit more glue in any place.

Here is a view of the four that I made using different fabrics.  You can see each one is unique.  It doesn't matter if they are not perfect - you can see that mine
are not - personally, I think it adds to the handcrafted look.

Your fabric swirls are ready to use as embellishments on a page or album cover, or to create into something unique.  Play around with the fabric you have in your stash to see what you can create!

Tutorial: Christmas Fabric Embellishments or Pins

I bought some beautiful fabric, buttons and gold crinkle paper from Stampin Up, and with the addition of some gold netting I added, I set out to make some embellishments for my December Daily.

Dusted off the sewing machine and set up shop to make just a few embellishments.  I made three different circle templates from cardboard (circle sizes depend on the use of the embellishment...I think my largest was about 3"), and used these to cut out the fabric circles from each of the three fabric designs.

Next, I cut out a strip of the gold crinkle paper and folded it to fit.  I cut out a strip of gold netting, folded it a few times, or cut it into strips (I played with some different looks for this), then I sandwiched all layers together as shown. I did find it a bit tricky to fold the crinkle paper, netting and hold it all together to get ready for sewing.

I used the sewing machine to sew all layers together.  I did not worry too much about doing it in a perfect circle, I just wanted the layers to be held securely.

I love the addition of the gold crinkle paper - it reminds me of the fancy papers that really good chocolate comes wrapped in.

Trim any excess from the edges of the netting to get the look you desire.

Finally, I threaded and tied gold and shimmery red floss through the button, and glued the button onto the fabric (I used the 3 in 1 glue).  Add a few pearls and diamonds, or other accents to finish it off.

Once I saw the finished product, I knew I just had to make more than a few of these.

Your fabric flower is ready to use on a page or album (hmmm....sneak peek for my December Daily!), or add a safety pin to the back and it is ready to wear!

Materials:  Fabric, gold netting, gold crinkle paper, floss, button, embellishments (pearls, diamonds...), glue, sewing machine

A Dynamic Duo!

No, not Batman and Robin...
Scrapbooking + Fabric!!

I was checking out the Cosmo Cricket blog and came across an apron made from the Material Girl design, and found this link "I'm Just a Guy Who Quilts".  I did not know you could find Cosmo Cricket designs in fabric - how cool is that!  Think of the possibilities!!

I also love the Early Bird design, and found bundles of fat quarters in that.  The gears are turning...scrapbooking plus sewing - the possiblities are endless!  I am going to have to dust off the sewing machine and find some of these fabrics!

So, then when I checked further, I found the company Fat Quarter Shop who sells the fabrics. Now, think December Daily - can't you just see incorporating some of these cute Christmas Fabrics into your album?  Or, even making your entire album out of fabric! Please share with us if you are doing this!

Then, delving a bit further into the links with the Material Girl apron on Cosmo Cricket, I discovered this one, which took me to the the mini album Sheila and I made together from Paisleys and Polka Dots - "Material Girl." The world evolves in circles I think. One path leads to another...maybe it's like a big paper link, where one connects to another.  That's what seemed to happen to me as I was doing some blog hopping.

I hope you may be feeling a bit inspired to do some sewing with your scrapbooking after checking out the links in today's blog post!  Let us know!
