Things With Wings

Hello Monday! This week we are all about Things With Wings! I "flew" off in a different direction with this challenge and created a stuffed felt bird.

It has been great having Linda with us for the month of March, sharing her creative talents!! Looking forward to your creativity in the future and wish you the best, Linda!

I recently taught a group of friends how to make these birds. My idea was to put them on a stick and put them in a houseplant to bring in some cheerful color (we've had a lot of grey days) at home. Another idea is to add some thread and hang them.

So, where do we all go for ideas - Pinterest, of course! I did the same looking for ideas, and then I created a pattern to make my bird. You can see the different pieces here which are laid out onto a piece of 8.5 x 11" cardstock. (21.5 x 28 cm)

I made up bird kits with different colored pieces of felt that I cut out.

Each set was different, so we made an entire flock of colorful birds.

As you can see, I went with one of my favorite color combos - green, blue and purple. I had to remember the different embroidery stitches, but it came back pretty quickly. You can also google basic embroidery stitches and there are a ton of resources available.

I embroidered each larger piece, then sewed it on to the body, along with the beak and eyes. I stitched around it with the blanket stitch, leaving an opening of about 2"(5 cm) in order to stuff it with polyfil.  Final step was to insert the skewer and it is ready to "plant."

I had also put together hearts for us to embroider, and even though it doesn't have wings, I thought I would share it too. Lucky for me, my husband had given me these beautiful tulips which were the perfect prop for the photos!

It was a great evening with friends making our stuffed birds and hearts, I really enjoy crafting with others. I hope you the opportunity to create with friends too! I would love to see you join our challenge this week and make something with wings!
