Resist It: Gesso Resist

Hello Monday my friends! I hope you have had an excellent week. Our new challenge for you this week at Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge is - Resist It.  There are so many ways to add resist or interpret this theme (funny how life works out, but the day I worked on my "resist" tags was the Women's March in the USA).

Hasn't it been wonderful having Amber Sheaves with us this month? Thanks for sharing all of your wonderful creativity with us, Amber, and I know I am looking forward to your future projects!

I started out with the thought of making one tag, then that morphed into two, and finally evolved as an art journal page. Sometimes, my Muse takes me on winding paths.

Today is Full of Possibilities
(the way I like to look at life)

I thought about different ways to create resist, and chose to use gesso. I used a palette knife and spread it randomly, and thicker in places over the tag. Be sure to leave some areas untouched.

I partially dried the gesso, then went back in with my palette knife and tapped and pulled to create a stucco texture.

I sprayed my tag with three colors on the left, and you can begin to see how the gesso areas are "resisting" the color. Then, I thought as I was looking at all that luscious color pooling on top, why not do a second tag. I pressed a blank tag on top of my gesso tag (left)  to pick up the inks (tag on right).

I added Distress Oxides onto my second tag.

 Right: inks only tag

I decided to play a bit more and use stencils with Distress Metallic crayons.

When you heat the crayon it bubbles up into a fun texture. Watch it carefully - it is done when it bubbles.

For a touch of contrast, I went around the edges with Mermaid Sparks and dabbed a bit of that and the brass into areas of the tags.

I am loving how these turned out!! (Left: inks, Right: gesso)

I decided to add some butterfly people to the tags and tied them off with some sari ribbon...

Then my Muse said, why not put them in an art journal and make a page? So, I listened!

I really like how the tags look against the burlap in my Dina Wakley Media Journal.
Now, I am wondering how you are going to Resist It.
Have some creative fun and play along with us this week, you might win the shopping voucher from our generous friends at Simon Says Stamp!

  10. What a great technique and a beautiful bright color palette! And I especially love how you used a sentiment that you embrace and live by. I can tell you live by this mantra and it inspires me every time I see your artwork or read your words.
