Recycle Style: Across the "Pond"

Hello Monday! First, I want to give a warm welcome to our newest team members, Cathie, Kath, Macarena, and Zoey!! I am so excited to have them on the team with us, and am looking forward to their projects....Welcome!! If you missed the announcement, you can read about it here.

I've been playing with the cardboard...we get so many boxes delivered, and always seem to have a surplus of them, this was the perfect material for me to use this week!

This week, we are all about recycling and up cycling. We thought we would look through our "rubbish" for something we would normally throw away, and find a new purpose for it. We live in a society where so much gets tossed, we can definitely get creative in finding new ways to use the "junk".

You get that box in the mail, empty it out and set it down, and it doesn't take long before someone is playing with it...a child or a pet. I remember getting a refrigerator box to play with when I was a kid, and we made into so many things from a house to a car, played happily in it for weeks until it finally fell apart. It was fun to reminisce while working on my project for this week.

I am making some ATC's this month to exchange with an art friend "across the pond". So, for my first one, I wanted to create something that would symbolize the journey from my home to hers, and that we are sharing this artistic adventure.

So...it all started with cardboard! Personally, I love corrugated cardboard, it has such an awesome texture and I could create some great layering with it.

Next step is painting layers of colors onto the cardboard. I love this wonderful texture, if I do say so myself!

Work in progress, mixed paints on a piece of craft mat for easy clean up, took parts of the earth off of the die cut to use...oh yes, I used an old manila folder to cut out the globe.

A bit of detail...

Pinned "found" and "world" to my ATC.

Upcycled from cardboard and manila folders...into this. It will be heading over the ocean to its new home soon!

So come on! I know you have something you can pull out of the bin to create with! I am really interested in seeing what you upcyle/recycle this week, so please join us in the challenge.

Every week, Simon Says Stamps offers a generous $50 voucher to one lucky participant!

  9. This is a really interesting piece, Maura! It is more of a work of art than just a craft. I am amazed at how you made the cardboard look so...non-cardboardy. This reminds me of some mythical beautiful rusty dusty treasure that washed up on the shore somewhere. And I love how you tied the charms in to the pieces of the world die you used. This English major always appreciates a nod to tying in verbiage! Super cool piece this week, as usual!
