Back to School: Science Notes

Hello Monday! Thanks for joining me this week for our newest challenge, Study and School Related. I know school has changed over the years, some are year round, others return in August, and here in New York, school begins in September. I retired from teaching a few years ago, and Labor Day Weekend was always my summer swan song! Now I look forward to September for entirely different reasons.

Hasn't it been awesome having Simona Rebecchi with us this month? I am looking forward to your creative work, and we'll miss you around here!

Don't forget...it's the last few days of the Kid's Summer Challenge!! I've really enjoyed checking out their amazing creativity!!

School makes me think Science, since I taught science for many years! I decided to make some fun little notebooks for several science teacher friends so they will have a place to jot down their ideas, lists, doodle, etc.

I found a black chipboard book in my stash, and the 6 pages were perfect for my covers. I cut blank and notebook paper to fill them with, and punched a hole into them.

Since to edge of the book had this curve, I hand cut the pages to fit them to it. Yep, lots of scraps, but it really didn't take too long as I cut them in batches.

Now the fun begins! I chose three palettes to work in with the Distress Oxides. I swiped the color onto the Craft sheet, spritzed it and wiped the watercolor paper through it, and held it up to drip a bit.

Each time I had a bit left on the mat, so I used some scraps from cutting the paper and swiped up the rest of the color.

I wanted to add a bit more to the backgrounds before stamping, so I used a variety of Simon Says Stamp stencils, and the Distress Oxide with a mini blender. I lightly misted, then dried it.

I love them just like this and could have left them alone, but I wanted to add in the science twist, so stamped the scraps with the Indigo Blu Calculus stamp and the grey ink, then The Chemist set with the black ink.

I took my white pen and doodled around each one and added a word. On this one for my friend who teaches Physics, I added a gear where the test tube is.

For my friend who teaches a bit of every science in the middle school, I used the books and quill along with the blackboard notes.

And this one is for my friend who teaches Chemistry.

Hmm, maybe I should have made one for myself! Definitely a fun project with the bright colors, doodling and fabulous fibers!

Are you thinking school and study? Maybe a gift for the new teacher? A treat for your child's lunch? Whatever it is you make, please share it with us!

  12. These are so beautiful and....funk-tastic! (Your work always inspires me to invent new words)! I used to teach junior high school and these almost ALMOST made me wish I was a teacher again if these are the kind of goodies that someone would've made for me! I love so much about them-- especially the backgrounds and the white doodling along the edges. And hey- that hand cramp you probably got from all that cutting was worth it because the shape of these is awesome! Kudos to another outstanding job and I love how you personalized each image for the specific teacher involved.
