Simon Says: Use More Than One Stencil!

Hello Monday, my friends! I love to use stencils, and that is what this week's challenge is all about at Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge. Our theme is USE MORE THAN ONE STENCIL. Easy Peasy, right?

I was inspired by the wonderful artist Gwen LaFleur, who I had the great fortune to meet on my trip to India last fall. I admire her mixed media work, and all of her lovely stencils at Stencil Girl - many of them inspired by her travels around the globe.

Fly high into the sky and soar on the winds...

I started off in my Dina Wakley Media Journal by scraping on a layer of white gesso. Next, I stenciled with Texture Paste once that was dry. Here, I am using the Boho Birds stencil and the Art Deco Peacock Feathers. I let this dry overnight, only because it was humid.

I wanted to make the background in browns, so chose a couple to splat down, and brush together. Some metallic is always fun.

I added some other layers into the background with the Art Deco Flower Medallion and Art Deco Peacock Feathers, with the Cherry Red and Terracotta. I still like to sponge my paints into the stencils.

Detail of this step

Next, I am ready to work on the bird, and used several blues to get a nice variation in color.

I decided to add another stencil layer with the Double Denim and Boho Mandala Circle.

I wanted to also add in some stamped designs, and the Henna Patterns from Simon are perfect here.

Time to add in some spray inks and create even more color and texture. I used Vibrant Turquoise, White Linen, and Gold.

I decided to go in again and stencil a layer of top of all of this with the copper. Love that metallic sheen!

I carefully laid the stencil over the areas I had done with the texture paste, then rubbed the tarnished brass distress crayon through the stencil. I used the heat gun and made it bubble up a bit.

I did add a bit more with a white pen, and added a shadow to the bird.

Stencils are a fantastic tool to work with to add layers and designs, and are great for art journaling, creating a canvas, making cards, adding to fabric...I love how versatile they are!

I hope I've inspired you to join us this week and get out your stencils! I'm looking forward to seeing your creation.
Our generous friends at Simon Says Stamp are offering a $50 shopping voucher to one participant drawn at random.

  8. Wow, Maura! If I had to list one of your many crafty superpowers, it would be stencil utilization! Leave it to me to think of a nerdy-sounding superpower, but the bottom line is that I love seeing the clever ways you utilize supplies...especially stencils!
